Ilya Sutskever leaves OpenAI 6 months after Altman Ouster’s failure

OpenAI co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever is leaving the company after nearly a decade, he said Tuesday in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Sutskever said he is “confident” that the company will continue to develop technology that is “both safe and beneficial.”

Sutskever’s role at the company has been called into question over the past six months after reports indicated he played a key role in the CEO’s shocking and ultimately botched ouster from the board and OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman in November.

Two people close to the company told Business Insider in December that Sutskever was essentially forced out of OpenAI following the attempt to remove Altman as CEO.

Sutskever said he was “excited” about his next steps, about which he said he would share more details “in due course.”

Neither OpenAI nor Sutskever immediately responded to a request for comment from BI.

In his own article on X, Altman said: “Ilya and OpenAI are going their separate ways. It’s very sad for me; Ilya is easily one of the greatest minds of our generation, a beacon in our field, and a dear friend. . His genius and his vision are well known; his warmth and compassion are less known but no less important.
