Illinois State Police have activated an emergency snow plan as a winter storm hits the central and southern parts of the state.
Troop Six, which covers 12 counties in parts of central and southern Illinois, launched the plan as heavy snow persists amid an ongoing winter storm warning in the region.
In accordance with the provisions of the plan, which covers several highways and numerous national and departmental roads, a “towing ban order” has come into force. According to authorities, this order means that broken down vehicles that do not pose a danger on the road will be left on the side of the road or in ditches until the snow disappears.
Additionally, only crashes involving significant vehicle damage or personal injury will be handled by State Police as long as the storm continues. Minor crashes will be addressed later.
Finally, stranded motorists will always be assisted and transported to safe locations.

Between six and 12 inches of snow could fall in parts of central Illinois, leading to multi-vehicle crashes on Interstate 70 and reports of nearly impassable roads in the area. Blowing snow is also impacting visibility in the area, leading officials to ask residents to stay off highways where possible.
Parts of southern Illinois could also see sleet and ice, adding another challenging element to the storm.
This storm is expected to continue throughout the day Monday, officials say, with residents urged to stay home if possible for its duration.
