Illinois sinkhole leads to closure of Route 185 near Hillsboro – NBC Chicago

Dangerous road conditions caused by a massive sinkhole prompted the Illinois Department of Transportation on Monday to close part of a highway in the central part of the state.

Photos posted to Facebook by IDOT showed the large sinkhole, surrounded by dozens of traffic cones, just yards from Illinois Route 185 in Montgomery County. IDOT explained in the Facebook post that the diameter of the sinkhole had increased slightly, making the area unsafe for travel.

Route 185 will remain closed “until further notice” while a geotechnical consultant assesses the situation, according to the state agency.

The sinkhole is located about 50 miles south of Springfield, between the towns of Hillsboro and Coffeen.
