Egg dye is a colorful Easter tradition. Although the wholesale prices of eggs can start to decrease after months to rush, according to data from the American department of agriculture, they are still around 60% higher than a year ago. As vacation approaches, the development community highlights creative alternatives to standard raw materials.
“I was just thinking:” Who will want to waste eggs on the dye this year? “” said Jennifer Needham, who runs the children’s planning website “The Party Teacher” where she recently published a blog on egg dye. “You always want to have tradition with your children, but it has become too expensive.”
Marshmallows – not just for smores
Rachel Anderson of the social media account Created at homePublished a tiktok video on the dyeing of marshmallows for Easter.
“Since the prices of eggs have increased considerably, I found an alternative fun (and much cheaper)!” Anderson wrote on his article, which received more than 50,000 likes.
“Everything you need is a jumbo and food color package. Mix the food color with cold water and place the marshmallow in it for one to two seconds. I really enjoyed marshmallows more than eggs.”
Potatoes – the small are the perfect size
The craftsmen also show creativity this Easter with the humble spud.
“Jump the expensive price of eggs this year and try dyes dyed for Easter eggs instead!” Exclaims an article on the “Rose Bakes” website. “With only two ingredients and minimal preparation, having potatoes instead of Easter eggs means buying less dear eggs and having a lot of fun with the whole family of potatoes.”
The article continues to explain how small potatoes or baby potatoes are ideal, because they are close to the size of an egg, and they can be used raw. No need to cook or cook them.
Other craftsmen also show the technique, as in this Facebook video of the Digital Creator team Liz and Jeff.

Wooden egg dye is a magnificent and durable alternative to dyeing edible eggs – but that will not save money.

Plastic and wood – the ups and downs of the experimentation
Needham of the Party Teacher Site said that it experienced plastic and wooden eggs this year – sometimes known as “craft eggs”.
Indeed, the craft company Michaels said that demand was in place for its craft egg kits this year.
“Handicraft egg kits are always a favorite from Easter to Michaels,” said Melissa Mills, main vice-president of the channel and head of general merchandise. “However, this year, we see a strong demand much earlier than usual, which suggests that more customers are looking for creative egg alternatives.”
Needham said plastic versions are cheap, but unfortunately, they do not hold dye. The advantage is that they can be decorated in all kinds of other ways: “I broken down with a number of things. I used tissue paper. I used losses of fabric. I used towels that had pretty little rabbits,” she said.
As for wooden eggs, they are dying well, especially if they have a matt finish. However, wooden eggs tend to be more expensive than standard edible. However, they have the advantage of longevity.
“So if your child has created a precious egg that you want to keep forever, you can do it with a wooden egg,” said Needham.
