Idaho father and teenage son killed in plane crash

A father and his teenage son were killed in a plane crash last Sunday in Idaho, the Valley County Sheriff’s Office announced.

The victims have been identified as Neal Humphrey, 48, and his son Cooper Humphrey, 15.

The deceased was flying in a green and tan single-engine Piper PA-20, which was scheduled to arrive at Johnson Creek Airstrip in Valley County on the evening of June 26, the sheriff’s office said. Dispatchers were informed that the plane had taken off around 8 p.m. that evening.

Valley County dispatchers received a call from the Idaho Division of Aeronautics Monday morning notifying the sheriff’s office of an overdue plane.

A Forest Service plane reported a crash site about 1.6 miles away in Valley County just before noon Monday. The pilot said there had been a small fire at the crash site and there appeared to be no survivors.

“The crash site is on a steep hill which is a designated wilderness area,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Valley County Sheriff’s Office personnel contacted several air-equipped partners to recover the remains. The Idaho Air National Guard assigned a hoist-equipped Blackhawk helicopter and crew to assist deputies in retrieve.”

Valley County deputies and the Idaho Air National Guard arrived at the scene of the crash Tuesday and recovered the bodies of the victims. The Humphreys were the only people on the plane.
