ICQ Messenger shuts down after almost 28 years

Messaging app ICQ is shutting down on June 26, marking the end of a popular communications app.

Before AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, or Discord (which came much later), there was a free messaging app called ICQ that over 100 million users used to coordinate plans, chat about life, or communicate while gaming to online games.


ICQ (“I’m looking for you”) was launched in 1996, shortly before AOL Instant Messenger, and was popular for its ease of use, one-on-one or group chats, and ability to communicate with people. people from all over the world. in real time and free of charge.

At its peak, ICQ had over 100 million users on its platform, which was a remarkable achievement at the time. In 2010, ICQ was purchased by Mail.ru (now VK), which has since owned the products as their usage declined.

Today, ICQ announced its closure on June 26, recommending users to switch to VK Messenger and Workspace.
