Iconic “Home Alone” home in Winnetka hits the market. This could be yours for a hefty price – NBC Chicago

The famous “Home Alone” house – one of the most iconic movie theaters and a popular Christmas attraction on Chicago’s North Shore – has hit the market.

The red brick Georgian house at 671 N. Lincoln Ave. in Winnetka, known as the McAlister family residence in the 1990 Christmas cult classic, was put up for sale Friday, according to its Zillow page.

For movie buffs, Christmas enthusiasts, or anyone interested in owning the “legendary holiday dream home,” it won’t come cheap. The more than 9,000 square foot residence has been listed for sale at $5,250,000, its listing states.

If you look through the photos on the list and they don’t look anything like the scenes from the movie, there are a few reasons why.

The house was too small for all the crew members to fit in, so the interior shots were actually filmed at the gated New Trier Township High School. Additionally, the house has undergone a major renovation in recent years.

According to the listing, when the home was completely renovated and expanded in 2018, the owners “took great care to maintain the architectural details and integrity of the home’s most memorable and recognizable spaces.”

Key spaces, like the breathtaking entry hall and staircase, as well as the formal living and dining rooms, have remained largely unchanged.

Comprised of five bedrooms and six bathrooms, the residence has a number of notable features, such as a luxurious master suite with a gas fireplace, two laundry rooms, and a converted junior attic suite that offers “a magnificent escape at the top of the trees”.

There is also a recent addition featuring a sun-filled family room with expansive 10-foot, 4-inch-high coffered ceilings and walls of French doors that open to the inviting courtyard.

If you’re already impressed, wait until the basement.

It includes a fully equipped gym, recreation area, full bathroom, wet bar and state-of-the-art theater room, according to the listing.

If that wasn’t enough, there’s also a state-of-the-art indoor basketball court with a realistic three-point line.

If you’re wondering, the current owners purchased the residence for $1,585,000 in March 2012. Although the house is not open to the public, some lucky people have had the chance to stay there in recent years.

Bookings for an overnight stay were available through Airbnb just before Christmas 2021 and, unsurprisingly, they sold out quickly.

Tenants were able to enjoy the family home as they knew it: filled with Christmas decorations, traps, a candlelit dinner of highly nutritious microwaveable macaroni and cheese, aftershave from Kevin’s dad, ’90s junk food, the “best pizza in Chicago” and much more.
