Ian Maatsen’s father has confirmed the full-back wants to join Borussia Dortmund this summer, while accusing Chelsea owners of putting money ahead of the club’s interests.

Maatsen completed a loan move to the Bundesliga in January in search of more playing time, having played less than 400 minutes in 15 appearances for Chelsea.

The Dutch full-back has established himself as Dortmund’s first-choice left-back, while playing a key role in helping the team qualify for the Champions League semi-finals.

Ahead of the semi-final first leg against PSG, Maatsen’s father Edward confirmed that his son wants to make the loan deal permanent this summer.

In an interview with Dutch media outlet Voetbal International, Edward claimed the move was a “good reboot” away from Chelsea, insisting the clubs’ priorities were wrong under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

The full-back’s father has hit out at Chelsea’s priorities when Todd Boehly owned the club.

“We are working to stay at the club (Dortmund),” he said.

“Clubs have to fight among themselves. Ian is developing well here and things haven’t been going well at Chelsea since they changed ownership.

“In this club, a lot of things also revolve around money, which sometimes seems more important than the interests of the club.

‘We have more options outside of Chelsea and Dortmund, but Dortmund turned out to be a good restart. And look what guys are coming from there… (Jude) Bellingham, (Erling) Haaland.’

Chelsea are languishing in ninth place in the Premier League and face a battle to secure European football next season.

The Blues could face a second season without Europe since the Boehly-led consortium finalized its takeover in 2022.

Maatsen had signed a new contract at Chelsea until 2026 before finalizing his loan.

The contract, however, contains a release clause of £35 million.

The Dutch defender joined Chelsea in 2018 from Dutch giants PSV, before graduating from the Blues’ academy.

Maatsen has been on loan from Chelsea to Charlton, Coventry and Burnley, helping the latter to the Championship last season.

His performances with the Clarets led to Maatsen being named Championship Team of the Season.

Maatsen’s father warned that other young stars should avoid joining big clubs to allow their development.

“As a young boy, you really shouldn’t join a club that’s too big, with so much pressure. At Manchester City, for example, they don’t just put a young boy at left-back,” he said. he added.

“That’s where heads roll when things aren’t going so well and as a young footballer you’re quickly forgotten when things aren’t going well.”
