The European Union and the United States disagree on trade, Trump keeping 10% of prices on all imports of the commercial block as well as 25% on imports of cars and metals.
The EU has interrupted its own targeted prices in order to give space to negotiations during the Trump break at 90 days. But Brussels increased the pressure on Thursday by offering potential prices on almost 100 billion euros in imports, including large tickets like planes.
Shortly after the EU unveiled its long list of American goods that could be affected by prices, Trump surprised European officials by praising Von Der Leyen, saying that she was “so fantastic” and that he hoped that the two would come together soon. It was a big gap compared to the previous position of Trump not to engage with EU officials (none were invited to its presidential inauguration) and saying that the block was set up to “screw” the United States.
In his first reaction to Trump praise, Von Der Leyen laughed for several seconds before saying: “I like compliments … in general.”
