I traded in my iPhone 15 Pro for an iPhone 15 – and it was a big mistake

As a tech journalist, I’m used to changing my personal smartphone almost every month. This may seem like a chore to most people – and sometimes it is! – but the constant chopping and changing at least means I can sample almost all the best phones money can buy, which isn’t really a hardship.
Sometimes, however, the jump in quality between devices is so abrupt that it forces me to put words on the page, and my recent switch from the iPhone 15 Pro to the iPhone 15 – which was unintentional, might – I add – turned out to be one of those occasions.
Make no mistake, the iPhone 15 is an extremely solid phone. In recent years, Apple’s standard models have seemed like minor improvements over their respective predecessors, but the iPhone 15 bucks that trend by offering several key improvements over the iPhone 14, namely an elegant A16 Bionic chipset, a USB-C port, an extremely powerful processor. 48 MP main camera and Dynamic Island digital cutout. Hell, there’s a reason the iPhone 15 currently ranks as the best value iPhone on our list of the best iPhones. It’s crazy!
What the iPhone 15 is not, however, is the iPhone 15 Pro. Apple’s latest 6.1-inch flagship offers five key improvements over the iPhone 15: a faster A17 Pro chipset, a bit more RAM, a titanium design, a 120Hz refresh rate and a 12 MP telephoto lens. While not all of these upgrades are worth the $200 / £200 / AU$350 premium you’ll have to pay for the iPhone 15 Pro, two of them (in my opinion) are absolute necessities.
A faster processor? It’s neither here nor there. Yes, the combination of an A17 Pro chipset and 8 GB of RAM do make the iPhone 15 Pro a better gaming phone than the iPhone 15, but most iPhone owners will rarely – if ever – notice a difference in day-to-day performance. The color-infused glass of the iPhone 15 is also, to me, just as impressive as the titanium of the iPhone 15 Pro, so there’s no real gulf in quality either.
However, when it comes to the iPhone 15 Pro’s ProMotion display (i.e. its 120Hz refresh rate), the opposite is true, and it makes the standard iPhone 15 look downright medieval in comparison.
Refresh rate refers to the number of times per second your phone redraws the screen and displays a new image. The iPhone 15’s 60Hz refresh rate is fine if you haven’t used a screen with a 120Hz refresh rate on a daily basis, but once you’ve seen The Matrix, there’s no going back .
I’ve already explained why I think 120Hz refresh rates make Apple’s Pro iPhones worth it, and anyone who owns one of the best Android phones – almost all of which offer 120Hz refresh rates Hz or higher – will definitely feel like I’m preaching to the choir here. The recent return to the iPhone 15 has made me appreciate the benefits of Apple’s ProMotion display technology even more. It makes the iPhone smoother than butter on a sunny day, and I miss it a lot.
I also miss the iPhone 15 Pro’s 12MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, which I’ve used for almost every Instagram Story I’ve posted over the past six months. Seriously, if you own an iPhone 15 Pro (or Pro Max), just press the 2x zoom button before shooting your chosen subject, and the end result will look way more professional than whatever you’re trying to shoot with it. the phone’s 48MP main sensor (which is also shared with the iPhone 15).
Take a look at these recent photos from San Francisco, Apple Park, Seville and Stamford Bridge (home of my beloved Cheslea FC). In all cases, I was 30-50 m from the subject; you just can’t take these kinds of photos on the iPhone 15.
So, yeah – as soon as I get the chance to go back to the iPhone 15 Pro, I’ll be putting the standard iPhone 15 back in the TechRadar sample closet faster than you can say “Tim Cook.” By the way, we’re also hearing rumors that the iPhone 15 Pro could be the cutoff point for iOS 18’s best AI features, so maybe I’ll have to make that change sooner rather than later – you know, for “commercial reasons”.
