I was born, I grew up and I spent most of my life in Milwaukee. I got married and I had three children with my first wife there.
After the holidays in Maui, Hawaii, in their thirties, my wife and I decided to move there in 2014. We fell in love with the island and its slow life rate. I stayed for two years but I ended up divorcing; I went home on the continent.
In 2018, I started to go out with a friend, Cindy, whom I would marry. We went out at long distance at the start because she lived in Florida. After my three children got my secondary school diploma, I moved to Florida to be with her. My children liked to visit their father in a warm climate.
Finally, Cindy and I decided to sell everything and travel full time, but we quickly had enough traveling to a new country every month. It was then that we decided to settle down once again in Colombia.
I decided that we should go to MedellínColombia
Medellín is a popular destination for expatriates and digital nomads. I appreciated my previous visits to Medellín. I knew my wife and I could have a good quality of life there.
I knew that Colombia has great health care and a cost of living below that of the United States, so I decided to make our house to recover from a constant trip.
I asked and received a two -year student visa to study Spanish. Cindy was still traveling between Colombia and visited her family in the United States, so she had a tourist visa.
We arrived in Medellín in June 2022 and we started to work on the establishment of our lives.
I lived in the best part of Medellín, the Golden Mile in Poblado, and I optimized my life. The Golden Mile is an ideal place because it is accessible on foot with everything you need. I secured a magnificent two -room apartment with two rooms in a fancy building in Poblado.
Two shopping centers, with many restaurants, were at a 10 -minute walking distance. American brands such as Starbucks are also nearby. My language school was also located there.
I lived a luxury life for less in Colombia
I hired a cleaner and personal coach to come to the apartment daily. These professionals have released my time to focus on creating my business and healthier healthy.
I had great health care in Colombia and I used it frequently without Copays. During my stay, I had problems linked to a vasectomy and I needed to go to the hospital. The stay, the procedure and the visit of the doctor did not cost me anything.
I also used Rappi – a cross between Uber Eats, Amazon and a racing service – almost daily. You can order food, get medication from the pharmacy, have shopping, shopping for yourself and even deliver money. It was an all-in-one application that made me never want to leave my apartment.
In Colombia, I had all the comfort of a rich life without high costs, and I did not have to shake up to win this comfort.
My wife and I returned to Florida in 2024 to be near our grandchildren
After two years in Colombia, my wife and I returned to the United States for our families. We are back to pay a large amount to rent, so I cannot afford the comfort I could before. I cannot imagine how much it would cost to hire professionals.
We are leaving the country for good because I can no longer justify living in the United States. I cannot continue to lie about payment of the ever-increasing cost of living, and I am afraid that a medical emergency while in the United States will go bankrupt.
Life abroad offers us a better quality of life and saves us money. We can save, invest and work towards our objective of financial freedom without sacrificing our quality of life.
