It’s been over 520 days since I had an alcoholic drink for the last time. It looks like an achievement, given my days of pre-sobriety, I was known to polish a whole wine bottle in an evening or jump my gym training early in the morning due to a hangover. Since I had reached the legal age of alcohol consumption, my vacation had been synonymous with cocktails near the swimming pool and rosé on the patio, so one of my greatest worries in my first days of sobriety That was what the trip would look like when I didn’t drink.
Shortly after stopping drinking alcohol, I traveled in an expedition cruise, Whale Watching in Mexico Through National Geographic and Lindblad expeditions. I remember being delighted for the experience, but also nervous about alcohol all inclusive on the ship.
Stay sober on vacation It was easier than I thought, but it was a struggle to watch other passengers, including my husband, throw a few glasses of wine at dinner or sip artisanal cocktails at the ship’s bar.
I have often been told that sobriety is a muscle, the more you exercise it, the easier it is to let alcohol pass. It’s true: since my first sober vacation, I have visited an all-inclusive complex in Saint-Vincent, I stayed without alcohol during a Solo trip to LondonAnd even faced my fears during some of my favorite Florida Park Halloween Halloween events without liquid courage. So when my husband and I talked about making a trip together to celebrate 500 days sober – this time, an expedition cruise around the Azores of Portugal – I was not at all.
An expedition cruise looked like a perfect vacation to celebrate my sobriety victories

During our cruise around the Azores, we stopped in seven islands and spent our days hiking, walking and exploration. We have learned the story and the nitrogen culture, eaten incredible local dishes, seen from breathtaking views and struck a lot of cafes and stores in picturesque nitrogen cities. In the evening, we sat on dinner tables common to other guests and had great conversations late at night. The trip was unique and special, and be sober throughout Every moment was like the ideal way to enjoy it.
I am more physically capable of enjoying my trips

Expedition Cruises is among the most physically demanding trips that I have ever made. Not only are there full days of hiking and walking in the cities, but there are many staircases aboard the ship and activities such as stretch lessons early in the morning. Most days start with an alarm clock early in the morning around 6 or 7 a.m., followed by a mad race to prepare, have breakfast and disembark the ship for the adventure.
If I was standing late to drink and wake up, I would never have appreciated these activities as much as I do. In addition, I was overwhelmed each time I managed to finish a Difficult hikeBecause in my days of alcohol consumption, my physical health was not as good as it is now.
I make more memories now

When I traveled and drunk alcohol, there were always games of my vacation that were blurred. Too many Aperol Sprizes in Italy, and I only remember one day we spent in Florence through photos. Bottles of wine by the pool on a Caribbean cruise? There are blocks of this day that I barely remember. Traveling sober allowed me to remember more of my vacation, as when we were picked up to sleep during the night in one of the igloos heated on the upper deck of our ship.
Where I would have previously had several cocktails and I fell asleep, I will now remember to have a pajama evening lit in candles with my husband in a glass igloo while we were watching the stars and we watch films on my iPad. In fact, all my memories of the trip, the hiking at the top of a volcano to watch the dolphins swim alongside our ship, are permanent lights in my alcohol -free brain.
Sobriety has only improved travel

Looking back shipping cruise We took last year, when I was only a few sober months, I would like to be able to say that the version of myself how much the trips would continue to go without alcohol. My biggest goal during the trips was my next drink, and now I spend a vacation to breathe in the fresh ocean air, proving how much my body is hiking and enjoying local cuisine, which has a much better taste when it is not drowned in alcoholic drinks.
I am more present, more relaxed, more energetic and more ready to take advantage of everything I do and to see my trip. Travels only improved in more than 500 days of sobriety, and I was able to take advantage of each destination every moment.
