For almost eight years, I did not have a car and I lived in great cities accessible on footLike New York, which meant that I often obtained nearly 10,000 steps a day just by going to work and performing daily tasks like having coffee or shopping.
When I displaced from New York to North CarolinaMy steps have dropped. I started working from my home, and most of the time, I traveled less than 1,000 steps a day.
I started to feel slow and disgusting for having moved so little throughout the week and I decided to look for a walking cushion.
It has been almost two years since I got mine, and I still use it to get between 8,000 and 10,000 steps (or sometimes more) per day. Some things helped me keep motivated to stick to that.
I knew I wouldn’t use a walking cushion that was not easy to install and put away
It was essential for me to choose an option as simple as possible to remove and store. Elliott Harrell
I knew that I would not have been likely to Use a walking cushion Regularly if I had to make a lot of efforts to install it, so I looked for options that bend in half.
My walking cushion folds at a little less than 3 feet long, so when I do not use it, I push it under my office.
With my current configuration, I can also leave my walking cushion connected all the time, so I just have to move my chair and exceed it when I am ready to walk.
As it is so accessible, it was easy to incorporate the walking cushion into my daily routine.
I don’t try to get all my steps at a time
I can easily go from session to walking and back, so I take my steps during the day instead of all in one session.
I generally try to walk for one or a half hours throughout the day, which I generally divide into a morning and afternoon session or a morning session, noon and afternoon.
If I really don’t want to walk one day, I will aim to do it for the duration of a meeting, generally 30 minutes, then I will go to sit a little before walking again.
Breaking my steps also break my day and gives me a little change in pace, which was also good for my mental health.
I always try to match or beat my number of steps
I am competitive by nature and I always take advantage of a challenge. So, most of the time, I check my number of steps on the health application on my iPhone to see how I go to my past.
My goal is to hit at least 8,000 steps per day, so I will look at my application periodically to make sure I am on the right track.
I also like to see how many measures I did on average the same era last year. If I am behind, I feel motivated to catch up. If I am ahead, I feel allowed to stay like this.
Sometimes I also have an external responsibility. My The neighbor bought the same walking cushion, so we sometimes send SMS to see how many steps that others take.
Above all, I like the way the use of my walking pad makes me feel
Work while I walk makes me focus more on the task to be accomplished. Elliott Harrell
Probably one of the biggest reasons why I continued to use my walking pad for so long is that it makes me feel better during the day.
When I start to have the impression of being in a crisis, walking, even a few minutes, brings me out. The daily movement like this is good for my health and helps me to feel more energetic.
In addition, I found that it can help meetings – especially those where I am more just a listener than a participant – passes faster.
When I walk, I feel more locked up on the task at hand, and it is more difficult to move away from my office and be distracted by something else.
Overall, my walking cushion changed the game for having made my steps and to help me be more productive at work. I don’t see a world where I never stop using it.
