When people learn that I am a travel writerThey immediately ask if I specialized in English literature in college or if I went to the journalism school. The truth is that I am really a convalescence lawyer.
I went to the Faculty of Law After studying chemistry in college and spent my first years of after -aded school in insurance defense companies, where I defended the doctors in cases of medical professional fault and slip-up and falling litigation. I loved discussing requests in court and preparing my business at the trial.
Reduce my career for my family
All this changed when I met my husband now, who is also a lawyer. While we are getting married and we started our family, it quickly became clear that it would be a major challenge for both of us to have intense jobs with long days of work while we had small children at home. I decided to take a less intense position in an insurance company, where I was able to look for my children before it did the night and that it was there for excursions on the field and special events.
We moved from Chicago In California, when my children were 5, 4 and 2 years old. My husband was able to obtain a law firm in California because he was already authorized here. To continue my career in law would mean passing the examination of the California bar, which looked like a nightmare, especially with three small children. I took a right break, focusing on the help of my family to adapt to our new situation.
I don’t know what attracted me to browse writing and Edition of the Craigslist employment sectionBut this is where I discovered a list of jobs looking for parents who would like to write about fun things to do with their children. I immediately applied and I was hired.
The salary was far from my old salary, but the work served a goal
Of course, this work of $ 50 per floor was not a comparison with what I was doing in my work as a fancy lawyer’s office (or even in my less fantasy insurance work). But it served a goal for this period of my life, when I had to be available for my young children. Better still, it gave me access to all kinds of museum events, theatrical productions and hotel opening where I could take my children with me, allowing us to explore this district of the country in which I had not lived for decades.
Over the years, I have continued to say “yes” to any opportunity that I had to write more for this publication, possibly becoming a publisher and then editor -in -chief of the trip. These roles came with many advantages of travel, allowing me to take my family to private islands in Tahiti and fantasy stations across the United States.
I could earn more money, but the lifestyle is better
Although I could earn much more money if I had continued my career in law, I would not have had time or the opportunity to take my family to these distant places. I could not have been a bedroom in the lessons of my children and look for them at school.
Traveling with my children allowed me to see them solve problems, to face uncomfortable situations and to really take your own adolescents. I was able to learn them as an individual when we made a cruise at Costa Rica, went to a racket in the Rocky Mountain National Park and we are pushed to countries where we did not know the language.
This career change was what my family needed
When people learn that I no longer use my law diploma, they inevitably ask me if I regret attending the law. Although I certainly wish that I have never had my law loans to face, I am always happy with my career progress. When I was a lawyer, I learned how the words had an impact. At the insurance company, we have regularly discussed the implementation of commas and the way a comma has changed the meaning of a contract. I always use these skills in my writing today.
I also think that my career progress is a good example for my children as we approach university age. We have put so much pressure on young people aged 18 to decide what they are going to do for the rest of their lives. I am clearly an example that you can always change and evolve.
