‘I just want her to come home’: Pet owner offers reward for finding missing monkey – WCCO

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (WCCO) — A local pet owner asks for help in finding his missing capuchin monkey.

The nearly 2-year-old monkey’s name is Coco Chanel, and her owner, Zaurice Steward, says she disappeared Tuesday night, possibly from the parking lot at Cub Foods in Maplewood.

Steward offers a cash reward of $3,000 for the safe return of Coco.

“I just want her to come home,” Steward said. “I just feel like I lost my child.”

Around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, Steward said he received a Facebook message from a family member telling him that Coco was missing.

“She literally wrote and said, ‘OMG Coco is gone,'” Steward explained.

The family member told Steward she stopped at Cub Foods near White Bear Avenue in Maplewood. Coco and her pink baby carrier were still in the back seat of her car. When she came out, the two were nowhere to be found.

Steward tried to search and she also filed a police report.

“Very strange,” said Lt. Joe Steiner of the Maplewood Police Department. “Theft from a car is not strange, but the theft of a capuchin monkey from a motor vehicle is strange.”

Steiner said it was also an unusual case because it is illegal to have capuchin monkeys as pets in Minnesota. Steward says Coco normally stays with another family across the border in Wisconsin, where they are legal.

“I’m afraid the wrong person has Coco,” Steward said. “I just want to make sure she’s okay.”

At this time, Maplewood Police are looking for surveillance footage and witnesses. Steward hopes for good news soon.

“I just want to find her and get her back safely,” Steward said. “I don’t care what I have to pay. I don’t care what I should do. I just want her back safe.
