E-mail arrived unexpectedly last week:
We will finish what remains of the project contract, but we then finish doing business with the Americans and American affairs. I know it’s not your fault, but your president has just started a war. We still love the American people but good luck.
And that, as they say, that’s it.
There are 20% of my cash flows.
This is the first time that I have been boycotted – my first time canceled.
I am an actor of voiceover. I provide the intelligent, trustworthy and engaging voice that you intend to tell a television advertisement, a medical devices or a mini-youtube mini-documentary. I am the voice of these boring required training webinaries that you are probably watched quickly. I am the hearing comfort and security that helps relay information or push you to trust a brand or a message.
But confidence in “That American Sound” has been broken. My client – an international organization that interacts with the countries of each continent – no longer wants money to go to American individuals or to industry, and only wants a voice with American sounds is associated with its efforts full of hope.
He is not a Ukrainian client. It is not a change in Chinese, Iranian or North Korean society. The company is not based in the European Union. Instead, they are sympathetic Canadians, rightly unifying and patriotically against our nation now enemy, led by a crazy king.
And that’s how our old allies react. I can’t wait to see the actions of the nations that have always hated us.
When the email arrived, I wanted to protest against the decision – to download evidence of my entire voting file or to share links to my vast writings on LGBTQ and leftist initiatives.
Look! See! I am as upset as you! We are on the same side! I agree with you!
But that doesn’t matter. In the United States, everyone is guilty by association. The world has lost patience with us, even if we have not voted for Donald Trump. We are grouped together – that we really support the bad guys or that we are only losing causes that suffer under them – and there will be economic consequences for all of us.
Rejection is part of the life of any creative person. We are prepared for the speech “we take a change of direction”. The new CEOs, creative directors or VPs have come and shine with relations between existing entrepreneurs. The decision -makers are replaced by new blood. This is part of the concert and I have undergone such losses over the years.
But this email – this loss – stung. Any freelancer will tell you that when you manage to find this elusive client – the one who respects the borders, appreciate your work without microgestion or request for modifications, then (harshness!) Always pay you in time – you want to keep them for expensive life.
Things were going so well.
Now, this precious gift of a reliable flow of income has disappeared, thanks to the ridiculous prices of Trump and “let’s make Canada on the 51st state”. It is a devastating blow when I already worry about more and more companies using AI to write their scripts, edit their videos and even tell the fucking video.
However, when the initial shock and the injury to lose this contract dissipated, I had to tip my hat to these Canadians. I understand. I don’t blame them. Enough it is quite. Someone Must have the bullets to take a stand. And I have great respect for my Canadian friends and colleagues.
At least, my former employer had integrity to tell me the truth. He could have said that my work did not meet their standards, said they wanted a new sound, or blamed it to budgetary adjustments. He could have had ghosts.
Instead, he wanted me to hear – and thought it was important for me to know – that the words and actions of our intrepid chief will have consequences.
So, I’m boycotted … by sympathetic Canadians.
I guess I will compare myself with the former employees of the American government who were also thrown with violent and abandoned waste. I have an idea that we will hear similar accounts of the average Americans and not so means feeling the pinch in the coming months, while the most prospective nations get up (and our nonsense) and make rigorous and defensive movements.
The most intimidating questions remain. With as many burnt bridges – when all our former allies have turned away from us and have advanced new world powers led by reliable and mature leaders – what will happen to the citizens of this country and to this American experience?
Blue or red condition, we are all in the same bucket. We are the bad guys for everyone – and anyone on the right side of history does not come to save the bad guys. It will be up to us to save ourselves. But can democracy gain in the face of so many people who actively root its failure?
But I will continue to fight using my voice and writing, because what can I do else?
Post my sound military entrepreneur, because this is where we are heading? Or simply adopt a British accent and acquire a new postal address?
Right now, I’m in mourning – on everything.
