One of the most par excellence sports car brands in Great Britain belongs to Chinese years – and after driving one of its best -selling cars, I could see the type of innovation combined at competitive prices that worry Western car manufacturers.

MG was founded in Oxford in 1924 and its cars appeared in countless films and television programs, led by Elvis stars in Audrey Hepburn.

The MGs were sold in the United States until 1980, but their owner at the time withdrew from the market in the midst of financial difficulties. Things never really improved and in 2005, MG Rover was bought by the Saic de China, although production continued in the United Kingdom until 2016.

The MG badge has never disappeared from the British exhibition halls and Chinese manufacturing cars are increasingly popular. The brand marked record sales of just over 81,000 vehicles last year, putting MG in 10th place for registrations, with a market share of almost 4.2%. About one MG in four sold was electric.

The MG4 Hatchback was the best sold EV in the United Kingdom last year and was the second most popular model with private buyers (as opposed to the fleet).

Part of the call is probably reduced to prices, which vary from £ 27,000 (just under $ 35,000) – about £ 13,000 less than the cheapest Tesla in the United Kingdom and almost the same as a Dauphin Byd – up to £ 36,500 (around $ 47,000.)

So what does MG4 like to drive? I had the most expensive XPower version, which promises 0 to 62 miles per hour in 3.8 seconds of the battery of 64 kWh – half the time that the long -term model takes. (A test of which car? Got the XPower to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds – faster, they say, than Porsche Taycan 4S.)

It also has all -wheel drive, improved brakes, launch control and has a maximum range of maximum diarfection between 239 miles on WLTP and 328 miles in the city.


Orange calipers are a beautiful visual touch on MG4 power.

I rather liked the shadow of matt green, although the style does not win any design price. Regarding Chinese electric vehicles, it could be much worse. The flashy alloy wheels with orange brake calipers are a nice touch.

Inside, the seven -inch screen behind the steering wheel (covered with leather) is completed by a larger and wider central screen with entertainment and navigation options.

I was happy to find a row of good old -fashioned physical buttons for the volume, the fan and the risk lights. However, the connection of my iPhone to the audio system was a more violent experience than it should be.


The screens are of a reasonable size – and there are also physical pimples.

I took the MG4 south of London a dark Sunday in a picturesque place called Box Hill. Unlike the other cars that I have driven for bi, that did not scold me when I exceeded the even speed limit of 1 mile per hour – a blessed relief since many roads have a limit of 20 mph. No more bonus brownie points. It is a breeze to drive, and as I suggested above, it goes like the clappers if necessary (on the highway, of course.)

In addition to providing levels of acceleration of bachelor boy, it is roughly the only relationship with the MG of yesteryear and this “hot hatch” is difficult to excite. Since it is almost certain to never be sold in the United States, you will probably not have to struggle with this dilemma.

If I was on the market for an EV of this size, I am not convinced that the power X would make my short list (and it was before I learned the MG4 with very badly in the annual reliability of What because?)

No matter what I think, the MG is likely to attract certain buyers who could have previously considered a Tesla Model Y, which is nearly £ 18,000 more.


You can get a lot of waste in the MG4 trunk.

The MG4 has a very respectable beach, a decent amount of trunk space – and you could install three adults in the back as long as they really love each other.

This can start at around £ 56,000 and only has two seats, but I think that the real star of the MG European models can be the magnificent Cyberster Roadster.
