I fought at UFC 100 and ‘nearly retired’ after UFC 200 – now I’m going to make history at UFC 300 against Dustin Poirier’s former foe

UFC icon Jim Miller is looking ahead to another historic night at the promotion’s latest anniversary event.

“A-10” is considered one of the promotion’s most legendary fighters, having fought the most times in UFC history, landing him in the record books for winning the most victories.

His first appearance came at UFC 89 in a submission victory over David Baron in October 2008, and he hasn’t looked back since with 42 total appearances in the octagon.

His latest outing will be part of the monumental UFC 300 card when he touches gloves with Dustin Poirier’s former rival Bobby Green at UFC 300 on April 13.

The third centennial pay-per-view will feature Miller, as will UFC 100 and UFC 200, which will represent a milestone in the American’s career.

Although he never reigned as champion, the veteran has fond memories at 155 pounds, especially when he competed on the famous 100-fight pay-per-view.

At UFC 100 in July 2009, Miller defeated Mac Danzig to secure his redemption after suffering his second MMA loss four months prior.

He went on to fight an incredible 18 times before earning a huge spot on the UFC 200 card with Miesha Tate and Amanda Nunes.

The dangerous wrestler scored a victory once again, making a huge statement with a first round stoppage in June 2016 against the all-time great Takanori Gomi.

Although the victory breathed new life into his career on the big stage, he had considered retirement before the event after being diagnosed with limestone disease by his doctor.

“I was diagnosed two or three days before this event,” Miller said. “I was in Las Vegas when I received a phone call from my doctor saying he thought I had Lyme disease.

“So it was like I fought Diego (Sanchez), I came back and I started my meds and my protocol, and I was like, ‘Well, okay, let’s apply to participate in the UFC 200.’

“If this is it, if I can get through this, then we’ll see where it takes me. If I can’t, if the next few weeks are as bad as the last year and a half, then I was ready to take my gloves off in the octagon at UFC 200.

“But I was prepared. I was ready. I had already made this decision. That’s why I felt so comfortable talking about it over the last eight years, because I had made that decision.

“I had made the decision to walk away from sport.”

But that didn’t stop him and he defied the odds and continued his career for several years, mixing it with the best in the division including Dustin Poirier, Charles Oliveira and Anthony Pettis.

Today, his activity remains as frequent as ever, and Miller begged UFC President White to be featured on the latest attention-grabbing birthday card in Las Vegas.

And he tried his luck against seasoned campaigner Green, who he was due to meet twice in 2021 and 2022, but the plans were scrapped.

The 40-year-old, who is aiming for an incredible 27th win over ‘King’ at UFC 300, insisted he has no regrets from his action-packed stint in the UFC.

“I appreciate that (the fighters admire me). I think if everyone really thought about it, that’s what they really want. Respect from your peers, right? he said on the Fitz Chats podcast.

“For example, if you’re a brain surgeon, you want other brain surgeons to think you’re good. To have that respect from my peers (is amazing). It’s awesome.”

“It feels great to have left a mark on the sport so far. I hope the mark I leave will be bigger, but I know I followed the right path.

“I know it’s for the right reasons. It makes me proud and it makes me happy.

“As Dana (White) says, he doesn’t care what words are said between them and I agree 100% with that.”

The fan favorite will undoubtedly put on another show this spring, and it remains to be seen exactly how long his famous career will continue.

But he is certainly the king of longevity, and a name that will forever be engraved alongside the greatest.
