I drove the Chevrolet Equinox EV. This is the electric crossover the market needs.

  • The Equinox EV is a solid addition to the electric crossover market.
  • I found that Super Cruise enhances the driving experience.
  • The Equinox EV is priced and designed to directly compete with Tesla’s mainstream cars.

There’s another Chevrolet electric crossover on the market as the bow-tie brand moves toward electric vehicles while others retreat.

I was able to take the new all-electric Equinox EV on a quick spin around the Detroit metro area and came away impressed with the small sedan’s performance.

Two versions are available at dealerships today, with a starting price of $43,295. This is a much-needed new option in the sub-$50,000 price bracket for electric vehicles. GM is also promising even cheaper options for the Equinox later this year, with a base model that starts at $34,995.

The Equinox EV has an EPA-estimated range of 319 miles. Its DC fast-charging capability of up to 150 kW adds 77 miles of range in 10 minutes of charging, according to GM estimates.

The Equinox EV also has plenty of cargo space, with 57.2 cubic feet of storage with the second row folded.

This little Tesla fighter, priced and designed to directly compete with the Model 3 and Model Y, provided a smooth ride on GM’s pre-selected course that included on-road and highway driving.
