‘I couldn’t believe what I saw at first’

A nature photographer told a surprising discovery he made by checking one of his trail cameras.

While the brown bear is listed as “the least worrying” on the International Union for the Conservation of the Red List of Nature, the species was formerly considered to be extinct in Lithuania.

However, the large animal has made a handful of appearances in recent years, referring to its return to the local ecosystem. A very publicized observation occurred in the Šalčininkai district in Lithuania in April. Marek Kislovskij, an enthusiast of fauna and photographer, captured a brown bear walking in a neighboring forest using a perfectly located trail camera, according to LRT.LT.

Kislovskij told the publication: “When I came to check the camera, I couldn’t believe what I saw at first.”

According to Kislovskij, he did not know any meeting of brown bear in the district of Šalčininkai.

“I was really surprised to have captured such a blow and, of course, I was delighted,” he continued. “At the same time, it was a little disturbing to realize that a bear had recently worked in this same area.”

Now look: giant snails invading New York?

Trail cameras can be used as a perfect tool to monitor the well-being of fauna nearby while remaining hands. As in the case of observation of brown bears, trail cameras can also be extremely useful in the documentation of species rarely seen.

Although Lithuania has been described as a “non -motorway country”, Bears has once enjoyed strong populations in several European countries, but loss of housing and overhaul have contributed to their decline. Observation of a brown bear can be the sign of a flourishing ecosystem.

Brown bears can play a crucial role in the regulation of prey populations, the dispersion of seeds and soil ventilation. Although they can be considered intimidating predators, they are very suspicious of humans and generally avoid interactions.

This observation occurred only a few days after a bear was spotted in northwestern Lithuania. Laimonas Daukša, director of the association of Lithuanian hunters and fishermen, noted the importance of the observation to be made in Vilnius.

“A special day for the Lithuanian nature, because now, carries life in Lithuania, which was previously considered to be extinct, despite their regular visits to our nature, should also appear in the Red Book,” said Daukša, referring to the list of protected animals, plants and mushrooms in the country.

“As far as I know, according to the current procedure, only the leading species can be included, so we have the first bear that opened a new page in this book,” he added.
