Lorde discussed his gender identity in a new in -depth interview Rolling Stone with Brittany Spanos.
In the story, Spanos reveals that the lyrics of the first song from the next album by Lorde “Virgin” include “some days i’m a woman / someways i’m a man”, and asks how the words reflect his personal life.
“I ask her how she identifies herself now, what it means and what has changed,” writes Spanos. “‘(Chappell Roan) asked me for this,” remembers Lorde. The couple has become close friends in the past year. “She was like,” then, are you not binary now? “And I said to myself:” I am a woman with the exception of the days when I am a man. ” I know it is not a very satisfactory answer, but there is a part of me that is really resistant to the boxers.
The article continues with Lorde discussing more how it identifies.
“Although Lorde is always divided by a CIS woman and her pronouns remain unchanged, she describes herself as” in the middle of the genre “, a person more comfortable with the fluidity of his expression”, indicates history. “In some ways, she again feels like her teenager, at the time when her friends were mainly boys and that there was a relaxation in the way she dressed and acted.”
Lorde also underlines a specific exchange with the producer and writer “Virgin” Jim-E Stack who inspired a large part of his process of reflection on gender and how he influenced his music.
“In 2023, she went shopping in the clothing store C’H’C’m ‘and tried a pair of jeans for men,” writes Spanos. “She sent a photo to stack to get her opinion.” He was like, “I want to see the you who is in this photo represented in music.” It was before I have a sense of my expansion of the genre. “”
“Virgin” is expected to be released on June 27 and will be followed by a world tour.
