The Huntington Beach municipal council on Tuesday, February 18, appointed Mike Vigliotta, his new city lawyer, exploited an office against a myriad of prosecution brought by the state trying to temper the city’s challenge.
Vigliotta will replace Michael Gates, who announced last week that he would leave the town hall to become an assistant prosecutor at the United States Ministry of Justice. Gates, who was not at the meeting on Tuesday, had recommended that the council appoints Vigliotta as a replacement.
Vigliotta was the former assistant prosecutor of the city of Huntington Beach, but left the city in 2023 to become the prosecutor of the city of Orange.
“He did a remarkable job in the city of Orange,” said Council member Tony Strickland. “In fact, many colleagues from the Council, my friends in Orange, are crazy that we bring you here to Huntington Beach.”
Vigliotta will inherit from an office, skyrocketing legal battles and defending itself against the State on several questions, including housing, identifier of voters, an audit of city regulations and immigration law.
The lawyer for the city of Huntington Beach is an elected position, and Gates held the position since 2014. Vigliotta will hold the position at least until the position is again in the elections in 2026.
“We have a lot of fights that we have to win for the inhabitants of Huntington Beach, and I have the greatest faith that you are going to do a remarkable job,” said Strickland.
