Social media videos have shown a huge plume of black smoke and a fire ball riding from the explosion area.
Hundreds of people were injured following an explosion and massive fire in the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, more than 1,000 km (620 miles) south of the Téhéran capital, according to officials and public media.
The Iran’s customs authority said in a statement on Saturday that the explosion had taken place in the Sina container site, affiliated with the organization of the country’s ports and sea.
Tohid Asadi of Al Jazeera, reporting from Tehran, cited the state media saying that the number of injuries had increased to 406.
Iranian state television said the first reports indicate negligence in storage of flammable materials on the site.
Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, director of the Crisis Management Organization in the Hormozgan province, said on state television that the injured had been transferred to medical facilities.
He said security officials had previously visited the incident site and issued security warnings.

The National Iranian Petroleum Refining and Distribution Company published a statement following the explosion, saying that oil installations in the region were not affected by the explosion.
“The explosion and fires of the port of Shahid Rajaei have no connection with refineries, fuel tanks, distribution complexes and oil pipelines linked to this company,” said the company.
Earlier, Hormozgan and maritime administration manager, Esmaeil Malekizadeh, said the explosion had taken place near the Shahid Rajaei.
Social media videos have shown a huge plume of black smoke and a fire ball riding from the explosion area.
Other videos have shown damage to buildings and vehicles. Several people have also been seen in the area taking care of the wounded and verifying damage to properties.
The port of Shahid Rajaei mainly manages container traffic and also has oil tanks and other petrochemical installations.
In May 2020, Israel was accused of having launched a major cyber attack on the same port, causing chaos of transport for days after having crushed the computer system of the installation.
The explosion arrives at a sensitive moment when Iranian officials continue to engage in talks with American officials on a possible new nuclear agreement.
