Mail Sport revealed in October that Viana had accepted the work to take over from Begiristain – as director of football – who leaves after 13 years of trophy at the Etihad stadium.
The Portuguese was initially considered seriously in summer, but apparently advanced this date.
His former employers, Sporting, had wanted Viana to have seen the season, but finally allowed the 42 -year -old man to leave at the end of the January transfer window.
Viana was in Old Trafford for the draw for Drac Gotaless Derby on Sunday with Manchester United, sat in the directors’ box and attended some of the training sessions of Pep Guardiola.
Begiristain remains in situ until the club World Cup, working alongside Viana in the hope of a smooth transition.
