A lobbyist, senior executive and a purchasing manager at Huawei were part of the suspects of the corruption investigation which faced Belgian judges last week as part of the procedural hearings. The officials were preliminary accused of corruption, participation in a criminal organization and money laundering. They are presumed innocent.
It is not clear if the three employees dismissed and suspended by Huawei are the same as the officials of Huawei who were accused preliminary.
“The company maintains a zero tolerance position against corruption. As always, we are fully committed to complying with all applicable laws and regulations,” said Huawei spokesperson.
The Belgian prosecutor said on Friday that he had billed eight people in total, three weeks after the police had descended in the addresses in Belgium and Portugal, including the Lobbying Office of Brussels in Huawei.
Investigators examine if illegal payments have been made to guarantee political support for an open letter supporting the interests of the Chinese company and signed by eight members of the European Parliament.
Of the eight suspects, three are now under electronic surveillance, two have been released “under conditions” and three remain in prison, according to the prosecutor’s press release.
