Every week, the NPR television critic, Eric Deggans, writes on what he is watching. Read the column last week here.
This is the first question that someone asks me when they discover what I do in life: what do you look at right away? (With tacit follow -up: Do I have to look at it too?))
Well, these days, I am in the midst of a vast revision of the most excellent crowd drama Peaky Blinders, What made his debut for the last time a new season in 2022 (let’s just say that I learned that my love for star Cillian Murphy did not come from his turns Batman begins Or OppenheimerBut watching him play a damaged war survivor / gangster Tommy Shelby.)
Why would an occupied television critic spend time watching a series of which he really did not intend to talk about professionals? (So far!) Because youtube has told me.
These days, when I try to look at something interesting for a moment, I use my Apple TV streaming unit to call YouTube on my living room television. The algorithm serves links to a wide range of equipment that I could find convincing, videos on the battery – yes, I have been playing for over 40 years – clips of interviews from Neal Brennan and Conan O’Brien.
And one afternoon, it suggested that I watch the coolest scenarios of season 3 of Peaky BlindersPublished together by the official Youtube channel of the show. Which led me to watch the best moments of the first season, then to head to Netflix, where I plunged into the series since its very beginning and I devoured it as a classic book which removed the shelf.
I suspect that this kind of behavior is partly reflected in the last figures for media consumption published by Nielsen last week. According to their analysis, YouTube was the most watched media distributor in February – collecting 11.6% of the audience while beating organizations such as the Walt Disney Company (bringing together platforms belonging to Disney like Hulu and Disney +), Fox (stimulated by the Super Bowl) and Netflix.
Nielsen also says that the strong emission of YouTube was stimulated by increases among older viewers like me – the vision of YouTube between people aged 50 to 64 has increased by 62% since February 2023, while it has increased by 96% among people over 65 years old during the same period of time. Who said the elderly could not manage online?
Some may worry about the involvement that YouTube, who has stopped making original programs years ago, has audiences that beat all these companies that spend billions to do new things. But, as my somewhat inactive example shows, youtube the audience can also lead the public to equipment on other platforms. (Like more evidence, I also plunged into the reverse of The thread, sopranos, the west wing And Er After seeing clips assembled expertly on YouTube).
This week, I’m going to catch up with clips from a show I have only Never looked at YouTube, the comic / false of the end of CBS After midnight. The network announced last week that they were putting an end to the program after the decision of Taylor Tomlinson to leave the program – which presents comics giving funny answers to the social media questions – refusing to create a new original program for its time slot at 12:37.

Tomlinson published a statement saying that it was a “difficult decision”, but she knew that she had to go back to the comedy standing on a full -time tour – where, according to data from Display panel ‘S BoxScore, it generated $ 17.5 million in ticket sales in 2023, the year before her accommodation start After midnight. But I would not be surprised if another factor for CBS – which had already approved a third season of the show but closed it following Tomlinson’s decision – was a lack of audience on the network. (Tomlinson ranked third for average viewers during the time slot at 12:37 p.m. in 2024, behind Late at night with Seth Meyers And Night lineAccording to this story by the website, the latenger citing Nielsen data).
You ask you if one of the reasons why Tomlinson’s show has had trouble in the broadcasting ratings is due to viewers like me, especially to the youngest, who can Never I looked at him on CBS.
This is a challenge that has emerged for all inherited late evening television shows: they depend on the virality of social media to remain relevant and reach young viewers, but make their money via old -fashioned advertisements on cable and broadcast television channels.
This is especially true when the YouTube clips do not inspire a deeper dive on a different monetized platform, as for me Peaky Blinders on Netflix and The thread on max. Watch shows like After midnight On YouTube satisfies viewers immediately and completely – to make a better argument against the future of late evening programs on conventional television than all that a sarcastic critic like me can say.

Thursday starts on the privileged video
This is the closest thing to another Tremors Continuation or television program that we will probably never see. Kevin Bacon plays another working class bass taken in scandalous circumstances – this time, he is Hub Halloran, a hunter of morally questionable bonuses who is killed during work and brought back deaths to drive out demons in human form for the devil. I love television shows ready to make fun of some of the absurdities of southern rural culture without treating each character as if they had eaten a box of stupid pills. But none of this would be tolerable without an AS actor – including Justified The former Damon Herriman as an ex -wife of Guy Romanncing Hub – and a finely adjusted sense of absurd humor which makes work for the devil is like participating in the worst marketing scheme on several levels of the universe.

No What I look at The column would be complete without note on something I saw, so you don’t have to. Do not hesitate to give a large place to this new series of Netflix, which tries to take advantage of the trend of the medical drama relaunched by programs like The Pitt And Doc To provide a laborious and improbable show on a Miami hospital in front of a hurricane which is almost breathtaking by its own in the open. Willa Fitzgerald unfortunately follows his out -of -competition work in the first season of Prime Video’s Director Series with this failure, playing a third year resident who accuses his boss of sexual harassment although they live secretly and sleep together. Unfortunately, the rest of the show is not convincing enough to justify staying to discover.
Die for sex
Beginning Friday on FX and Hulu
It is a cheeky and daring look on many things in the life that we prefer to neglect – but I would like to have the television show more real. Based on a true story presented in a Wondery podcast, this limited series features the nominated actress with the Oscars and winner of an Emmy, Michelle Williams, like Molly, a woman with stadium IV breast cancer who decides to leave her attentive but domineering husband to try to have a more adventurous sex life before she dies. The result is a funny, embarrassing and tragic story approaching the will of a woman of average age to live as a sexy and vital person as long as possible. But so many situations seemed so predictable and laborious, I was stuck aspired in the series as subversive and entertaining as attempt.
