President Trump’s direct message, after a hectic week of decrees and presidential proclamations, could be summed up with this: take me to the word.
During the four years of political exile which followed his first mandate, Trump undertook to radically reshape the American life, culture and politics if he had another chance. His first week has shown that he will try to do exactly that – and quickly – while he is trying to keep the promises that propelled him to power.
Not all its guidelines will end up. But already, the United States is different from what it was a week ago.
Several efforts to combat climate change have been canceled and more land have been opened to oil drilling. The government now recognizes only two “immutable”, male and female genres. Migrants – now called “foreigners” – are turned back on the border and immigration agents have been free to target hospitals, schools and churches looking for people to expel.
Large -scale customs tariffs have not yet been taxed, but countries around the world are preparing for those who, according to Trump, will arrive on February 1. The efforts in favor of diversity within the federal government have been dismantled and the employees transformed into cookies. Federal money can no longer be used to finance abortions abroad. Mount Denali will be known again as Mont McKinley, and the Gulf of Mexico is now the Gulf of America (at least, according to the US government).
The career officials of government agencies were dismissed as part of Mr. Trump’s commitment to get rid of what he considers unfair members of “the deep state”. Safety authorizations and protection have been withdrawn from people that Trump considers political enemies. Tiktok benefited from a temporary stay after a forced stop, even though Mr. Trump canceled the efforts of his predecessor to establish safeguards around the development of artificial intelligence.
