Races to Watch in Indiana’s 2024 Primary Elections

GOVERNOR

Incumbent Gov. Eric Holcomb was barred from seeking a third term as governor because of an Indiana law that limits the top executive to two four-year terms in a 12-year window.

Many Republicans are in the primary election to replace him, including Sen. Mike Braun, who says the problems facing Indiana require more local and “hands-on” tactics.

He is opposed by former state auditor and current Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, who seeks, among other things, to eliminate the state income tax.

Former Attorney General Curtis Hill is also in the race, pledging to cut spending and increase investments in law enforcement.

Eric Doden is running on a pro-life platform that also emphasizes no-fee adoptions in the state, and Jamie Reitenour is running on a campaign that emphasizes cutting expenses and cutting red tape for small businesses.

In the Democratic primary, Jennifer McCormick, a former teacher and state superintendent of public instruction, is running unopposed, emphasizing investments in public education and a return to “bipartisan governance,” according to its website.

US SENATE

Rep. Jim Banks, serving in Indiana’s 3rd Congressional District, is the only Republican in the Senate race, running on an agenda that includes cutting spending and fighting what he calls ideology “awake”.

Two Democrats are also running, including former state Rep. Marc Carmichael, who is running to codify Roe v. Wade, enacting an assault weapons ban and fighting global warming, among other issues.

Dr. Valerie McGray is running against him, emphasizing raising wages and protecting unions, as well as improving access to health care in her campaign platform.

INDIANE 1

That district, which includes Lake and Porter counties as well as northwest LaPorte County, elected Democratic Rep. Frank Mrvan in 2022, but only by a narrow margin. First elected in 2020, he serves on the House Education Committee, as well as the Department of Workforce and Veterans Affairs.

Businessman Mark Leyva, who focuses on building a wall on the southern border and abolishing the Department of Education, is running in the Republican primary, alongside businessman Mark Leyva business and Lake County Councilman Randy Niemeyer and business owner David Ben Ruiz.

Lake County voters can find information about polling locations and early voting via the county website. Porter County Voters you can also find information here, and LaPorte County voters can visit the county website.
