The archers of the Indian compounds are one of the best in the world and they will soon have the chance to show their class at the Olympic Games. On Wednesday, the event made up of the mixed team was added to the sports program of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games by the International Olympic Committee.
This is the first time that archery has been reintroduced to the Olympic Games in 1972 that a new Bowstyle has been added to the competition.
Archery shooting takes a big step with the addition of events made up of the2028
The reapprising arc and its five existing reapprising events – the male and female individual, the male and female team and the mixed team – will continue to be part of the archery program in Los Angeles. In total, six archery will be available at the 2028.
“This is a monumental step for sport and for the millions of archers composed of the whole world that has long been looking for Olympic recognition,” said the Archery of the World Archery, Dr. Ugur Erdener.
“My deep gratitude goes to the International Olympic Committee, notably the president of the IOC Thomas Bach for his great interest in this important project, and the organizing committee of the 28 for their support throughout the process.”
“I am deeply proud of the work of the whole archery community and our athletes, who helped make a reality, and I am so excited to see what our first Olympic compound archers will achieve in Los Angeles.”
Archery returned to the Olympic program in 1972 with individual reapprising events for men and women. Team events were added in 1988 and a fifth medal – the Recurve Mixed team – made its debut in Tokyo 2020.
The inclusion of the event composed of the mixed team for the 2028 ensures that archery retains the balance between the sexes and remains within its athlete quota.
What is the archery composed?
The compound is a modern arc style developed in the United States, with cams and pulleys that improve efficiency and power. Since his beginnings at the World Archery Championships in 1995, he has experienced investment decades in high performance training and global development.
The Bow compound has been one of the world games since 2013 and appears in recent continental multi-sport events through the Americas, Asia, Europe and the Pacific.
Why will India benefit from this decision?
India has never won an archery medal at the Olympic Games, but the addition of a compound event can change the game. Indian compounds archers have always succeeded in global and Asian events.
The Ojas Pravin Deotale of India is the defending world champion and Asian games in the archery compound individual male, while Aditi Gopichand Swami and Jyothi Surekha Vennam won gold and bronze respectively during the individual female compound event during the 2023 Archery Championship.
Parneet Kaur, Aditi and Jyothi also combined to win gold during the event made up of the women’s team during the world archery championship.
Indian Compound Archers also won the five gold medals in their category in the Asian Games 2023, including the first prize in the mixed team. Gold was won by Jyothi and Ojas.
