Although the caliber of the stars is massive, there was a clear “white whale” that the co -creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were looking for – and really obtained.
“I have the impression that they obtained their white whale, who was Martin Scorsese,” said casting director Melissa Kostenbauder, THR. “I know what big fans they are, and really everyone is Marty, and once they got it and Ron Howard, it really started to show people the kind of level they were looking for.”
In The studio, Who has published his season’s season early on Tuesday, Rogen embodies Matt Remick, a newly named (fictitious) chief of the besieged continental studios who finds himself forever fighting and debating with his creative colleagues and demanding actors as to whether art and trade can coexist in Hollywood. Kostenbauder, whose credits include Victory time: the rise of the Lakers dynasty And Tokyo vicesaid Apple TV, a frequent distributor of scorsese projects as recent Flower moon killers And housing a first agreement with its Sikelia Productions banner, was a great help to mark the legendary filmmaker.
Kostenbauder remembers an “unusual casting process” in that they do not send scripts when the initial sending of the talent. “We would offer a meeting with Seth and Evan, and they were so good to take the time to speak to all these people to help them wad them and explain the character and answer all the questions and make them comfortable, because he never intended to bankrupt no one.”
Once the meeting is finished, the scripts were sent to the talent for total transparency: “It was a question of bringing everyone on the same wavelength and communicating in advance.”
“Some were a game, and some were not,” says Kostenbauder about some of the History Arcs of the characters. “And some really wanted to rely more – I don’t know if it was Olivia Wilde or Dave Franco – in a way to make fun of themselves.”
The idea of having Cranston Play Griffin Mill came from Rogen and Goldberg, explains Kostenbauder. “Bryan had been vocal during the strikes (actors and writers of 2023) and with the studios and when we talked to his agent – I knew him for a long time – we just talked and assisted, then he met the guys and fortunately, he was a game, because he is so good.”
After the news in which Scorsese and Howard participated in The studioMore and more people signed, she explains. “We have really approached a lot simultaneously because we have filmed all the episodes closely,” explains Kostenbauder. “We are talking about actors who are in great demand, so many of them were interested but were not available.”
The process of launching all the guest actors started before Kostenbauer joined the project. At first, Francine Maisler was the project’s casting director and started the pilot before the strikes. When the strikes of the actors and the scriptwriters took place in 2023, the production had to take a break and months later when they had to return to Set, Maisler became unavailable.
“I jumped to finish the pilot and do the rest of the series. It was clear from the jump, however, the world they created and the world in which they lived. There are a lot of celebrities in there, and they have in fact written many of them in the script, so when you read the script, there is thus, and thus in this situation, “explains Kostenbinder. “It was clear enough the level of people they need to get that this type of thing works.”
Continuous monitoring photos, or “oners”, which have now become synonymous with The studio was also cooked in the script and also played in the casting aspect.
“We always put care on whom we are launching and we make sure they feel comfortable on the set, but with this one, it was really a little heavy in terms of, you will be in this one time for an hour with some of these high-level people who are at the top of their game,” explains the casting director. “We were really aware of ensuring that they could manage it and were ready to do so. It was a question of finding those who adapt the best. ”
For Kostenbauder, having this caliber and this amount of guest stars was crucial for the success of the show.
“I think that for this to be credible, it really depended on the participation of these high-level actors and directors and writers,” she said.
