How the Mets and Yankees Remember the Subway Series Classic Matt Franco Game

The Subway series always had that new car smell, an air of disbelief, the intensity of October.

The city was celebrating the second anniversary of the reincarnation of the Subway series (Yankees vs. Mets), soaking up every ounce of what seemed extinct for four decades.

“People were going into their dream world,” then-Mets manager Bobby Valentine said last week. “I was living in the city at the time, and walking the streets of New York during those interleague games was as magical as the (World Series) in 2000 with how captivated everyone was. Every news show conducted with that, every last page and even the front page announced it. It was amazing to see how much the community was able to focus on the regular season games. I thought it was incredible.

The Mets hadn’t made the playoffs in over a decade. The Yankees had won two of the last three titles, entering 1999 with a record 125 wins per season. Mariano Rivera has maintained the team’s place at the top of the sport, allowing no points in previous playoffs.
