Brenton Wood (real name Alfred Jesse Smith) died in January 2025 after a long and important musical career. Since the 1960s, Wood has gradually risen through the ranks as a solo artist and rose to prominence with his single “The Oogum Boogum Song.” Last year he announced his Catch the Bounce: The Last Tour but had to suspend it after being taken to the hospital for an unknown reason, according to Variety. Fans of the late musician wondered if Wood’s hospitalization was related to the cause of his death, but he was hospitalized almost a year before his death.

Wood was a soul singer and pianist recognized for his hit singles “The Oogum Boogum Song”, “Gimme Little Sign” and “Baby You Got It”.
Since the release of “The Oogum Boogum Song,” Wood’s single has been featured in several television shows and films over the years, including The almost famous Umbrella Academy and, more recently, Don’t worry darling.
Throughout his decades-long career, Wood released several studio albums through 2009: Oogum Boogum, Gimme Little Sign, Baby You Got It, Come Softly, Out of the Woodwork, Sweet Old School, Classic By Design, This love is real And Lord, hear my prayer.
Wood was 83 when he died. He was born July 26, 1941 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Eventually, Wood and his family moved to San Pedro, California, followed by Compton.
Wood died of natural causes, said his manager and assistant, Manny Gallegos. Variety on January 3, 2025. The late musician was surrounded by his loved ones. Gallegos also told the outlet that Wood’s final words to his fans were, “Catch yourself to the bounce,” which is a reference to his 1967 single of the same title.
Wood’s net worth was in the millions of dollars, according to several media outlets. His exact net worth is unclear.
