However, it is very unlikely that Zinna died from the same disease that killed Arakawa, according to officials. As Phipps says, “dogs do not fall ill from Hantavirus”.
“These viruses are zoonotic,” she noted, “which means that they are transmitted from animals to humans.”
Phipps added that the risk of exposure to the home of Hackman and Arakawa was “low, similar to other well-maintained houses in the New Mexico”, but that the investigators “identified signs of entry of rodents” in other structures on their property.
“Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is a rare disease caused by Hantavirus, but a small number of human infections are found in New Mexico every year,” she said. “This is a serious illness.”
