WASHINGTON – About 19,000 civilian civilian employees in Louisiana will have until Thursday to send an email to “resign” – thus accepting a buy -back offer – or to face a radically modified work environment, said President Donald Trump Last week, after his budget agents moved to reduce the number of federal federals employed.
The decree, one of an overview signed on the first day in power, called on federal employees to stop working remotely and returning to the full -time office.
On Tuesday, his administration sent an email to federal civilian employees with an offer to offer resignation now and stay in pay until September. Those who refuse, according to memo, “will be subject to improved standards for adequacy and driving” as federal agencies are reduced.
“We believe that a very large number of people will not stand at work, and therefore our government will become smaller and more efficient,” said Trump. “And this is what we have been looking to do for many decades, frankly.”
Reining in federal expenses out of control and reshaping a lazy workforce was among the most important campaign promises of Trump – as well as the unique judgment of undocumented immigrants and slowing down what he called the Armament of the police against conservatives.
The federal government employs around 2.4 million civilians – approximately 1.5% of the country’s total workforce. US postal services and military in active service are not included.
The federal workforce is smaller, compared to the national population, than in 1960, and most government work is now carried out by private entrepreneurs, according to the Brookings Institution, a group of thinking on the left based in Washington.
Mike Johnson Chamber, R-Benton, said that the buy-back offer works around the laws on the public service.
“His team is off the beaten track: how can we solve this problem if we cannot dismiss people for lack of standing at work?” Well, let’s give them the possibility of taking a parachute, “said Johnson at a press conference on Wednesday. “They believe that perhaps 5% to 10% of the federal workforce will take their golden parachute.”
About 20% of the federal workforce lives in Washington and its suburbs in Maryland and Virginia. But California has around 147,500 civilian employees. Texas has around 130,000.
Louisiana has 19,442 civilians receiving a federal pay check, according to the Congressal Research Service. And the Mississippi has 19,560 federal employees, most of whom live near Louisiana.
The 180 buildings managed by the federal government in 38 cities of Louisiana are mainly post offices, courthouses, prisons, prison camps and medical clinics for veterans.
For the most part, the federal workforce of Louisiana includes law enforcement agents for various agencies. Around New Orleans and Red Baton, federal jobs include work for the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other recovery offices after sinister.
Compensation for current openings is around $ 45,000 per year, although professionals and lawyers and accountants can reduce the six low figures each year. An engineer who examines and designs water system projects in Jefferson’s parish can earn up to $ 84,000 per year.
Johnson has the most federal civilian employees among his constituency because they live near and support the two military bases in his district, according to the Congressional Research Service.
The head of the majority of the room, Steve Scalie, R-Jefferson, is a second point, largely because of the NASA Stennis Space Center on the Louisiana border with the Mississippi between Picayune and Bay St. Louis. The space base employs more than 5,200 people in around 50 federal, state and private organizations. There are overflows in Louisiana, with Michaud’s assembly installation in New Orleans East being the first example.
The Space Center works on the Artemis project of NASA, which aims to make a mission inhabited on the Moon in 2027.
The golden parachute is far from being concluded by any section, because opponents are already raising legal issues. In particular, the anti -deficiencies law prohibits the federal government from spending outside the authorized budget, which the acquisition should do.
“There is no budget line element to pay people who do not present themselves to work,” said senator Tim Kaine, D-Virginia, during a Tuesday evening speech on the Senate soil .
But senator John N. Kennedy, R-Madisonville, told Politico E & e on Wednesday that he thought that the laws on current spending were flexible.
“I think it’s allowed, and I think it’s a good idea,” he said.
Carl Tobias, a professor specializing in federal law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Richmond, told The Hill, a commercial publication, that the question is whether a president has authority.
All kinds of people may be willing to plead, he said.
