The reputation of the United States internationally has taken a massive blow in recent weeks, partly following the deployment of President Donald Trump to bring back new prices and the Trump administration adopting a radically different approach to European and Middle East policy compared to its predecessors. Now, a former national security official has a theory on the deep cause of this antipathy – and how she really goes beyond the current administration.
During a Friday segment on MSNBC, Ben Rhodes – who was deputy national security advisor of former President Barack Obama – stressed that Trump had been elected twice to the presidency. And that during his campaign in 2024 for the White House, he ran on “mass rates, mass deportations (and) of the destruction of the American administrative state”. And Rhodes observed that Trump was elected again despite his first turbulent mandate, which means to the international community that the American public actively chose the “chaos”.
“What the rest of the world looked at is, after the chaos of the first Trump presidency, after the chaos of January 6 … He was elected on this platform with a greater margin that he won eight years ago,” said Rhodes. “And so the difficult thing we all have to count with is, it’s not like Donald Trump was just that. He was elected to do these things.”

Rhodes continued by arguing that Trump’s re-election has broken the “confidence” that other countries had already had in the United States and that the retirement of this confidence will take more than an electoral cycle. He proposed that the retirement of confidence and the resumption of power would require “regeneration of American policy” in which the Democrats embrace their identity as an opposition party and leadership is given to an entirely new generation.
“They don’t trust the President of the United States and Donald Trump, and they don’t trust America because we have elected Donald Trump twice, and we have to face it now,” he said.
“So how can we come back from this? … We are waiting for the Democratic Party to find a formula in a laboratory in Washington. We are waiting for certain politicians to emerge with the right discussion points or the messaging strategy or the good electoral strategy every four years in the Wisconsin,” he continued. “It will have to involve people who are not in politics to get involved. It will be to have to be people who take care of each other. It must be people who defend things in which they believe.”
Rhodes stressed that “the rest of the world does not only see Trump”, but seeing American companies “capitulate” in the administration, the technological CEOs “become lackeys of Trump,” law firms “fall back” for reasons of profit and American universities “take place”. He concluded that the international community “is still waiting to see if there is a different America” from the one who elected Trump twice.
