How Angel Carter Breaks Her Family’s Cycle of Dysfunction

“We don’t call it prevention,” she said. “We call it early intervention for good reason, because if you start implementing changes and healthy conversations within the home from a young age, and if you really listen to your children and are there for them – by being physically, emotionally and spiritually present for your children – that’s all your children want.

One day, Angel says, when he’s the right age, she’ll tell Prince “the truth, that Aaron was a happy soul and he was a good person.”

And she knows that her nephew will one day learn the most shocking truths about his entire family. “It’s just a no-brainer,” she said. “But I hope he understands how important mental health is and the vital work we do to create these healthy conversations, and sees the lesson in all of this.”

Ultimately, Angel added, “I want to show the kids in my family – my daughter, my nieces and nephews – that these moments don’t have to define you.”
