How a Canadian drone fighter in Ukraine killed the Russian Lancet

A Canadian who fights for Ukraine has shot down a Russian Lancet drone with a fixed wing drone in a killing in a camera. He says he believes he is the first foreign volunteer to do so.

The drone operator, which applies to the “butcher” call signal and asked for anonymity for security reasons, said that the successful mission had come after months of training on a variety of drone models.

Butcher told Business Insider that he was “impatient” to get death since he was new in drone management. When he obtained it, he posted a video confirming that the Russian target was a Lancet, a kind of one -way attack drone.

In combat images, his drone can be seen approaching the air system not mixed from behind before the food cuts. It did not do a kinetics, which means that he did not steal in the Lancet. Instead, it has exploded an explosive nearby, marking a proximity interception.

“I got my first confirmed murder as a pilot today,” said Butcher on March 9. “And this one saved lives, since it was a lancet.” The lancets technically drag the ammunition, which means that they hide above the targets before flying in them and exploding.

While some blur ammunition such as the Shahed-136 manufactured by Iranian are used against cities and critical infrastructure, the lancets are regularly used tactically against frontal targets.

The beach, the weight and the speed of the Lancet depend on its variant. They were huge pains of pain for vehicle crews.

The Canadian drone pilot told Bi that he used an instructor instead of a helmet, which reduces fatigue for drones pilots all day.

Monitors also facilitate the determination of three -dimensional trajectories and positioning in variable altitudes, as drones can move, turn and dive quickly.

“There are times when (drone flight) becomes about the same as dog fighting,” he said, referring to air combat at close range between two planes, traditionally equippers.

Drone piloting, he explained is like using a video game controller, that other Ukrainian pilots have also noted. The operators previously told Bi that players tended to make very good drivers. But this war is very different from a game, because the decisions of the battlefield have very real consequences of life and death.

Butcher, originally a chef at home in Canada, went to Ukraine at the beginning of 2023 and joined an organization cooking for the troops on the front line. Ukrainian culture was a great aspect of his education, but he had lost his language and moved away from the community as they get older.

But in 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and began to seize territories in the Donbas region, “I started to pay more attention to what was going on,” said Butcher. It was propelled to action after the 2022 large -scale invasion.

In June 2023, he started working to provide aid to a non -governmental organization after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in the east of Kherson. He remained involved in humanitarian and military aid for months, also helping to translate.

He first started learning combat drones by volunteering with the Wild Hornets, a non -profit organization which focuses on the supply of systems not linked to the armed forces of Ukraine. He perfected other combat skills before enlisting in the basic formation last fall.

It is now focused on air defenses, often targeting drones used for intelligence, surveillance and recognition operations, and is deployed in the Donetsk region.

Ukraine has used drones more and more to intercept and eliminate Russia attack drones and blur ammunition, choosing to use them as cheaper options on air defense missiles. They also targeted the Russian intelligence, surveillance and recognition platforms which provide information on Ukrainian activities.

Working with drones has come with a learning curve, which is far from static. After Butcher decided to start training on drones, he started with different sizes and brands of first -person drone models. All these elements of the drone war, he said, are new and constantly evolving. Indeed, it was a headache for operators.

“What is happening here is that there is such an aggressive and rapid evolution of things,” said Butcher. “You can develop technology or a tactic or a system and implement it”, but once Russia has adapted, it becomes “a very fast cat and mouse game,” he added.

Ukrainian drone companies have been at the forefront of the development of new software and hardware technologies to give operators an advantage in combat. They also worked on the means of countering – or to avoid completely – to challenge adaptations such as extended electronic war and signaling jamming.

The operators previously told Bi that there was a “hidden electronic war battle” which was raging in Ukraine, demanding more drone units. “This is an ongoing challenge,” said a special unit.
