Hot air balloon crash in Lowell, Indiana; 3 people injured by electric shock – NBC Chicago

Three people traveling in a hot air balloon were hospitalized after being injured by an electric shock Sunday evening in northwest Indiana, authorities said.

The incident was reported around 6:57 p.m. near Indiana Route 2 in a rural part of Lowell in southern Lake County.

The Lowell Fire Department told NBC Chicago that three people were in a hot air balloon as it approached the power lines. Although the balloon did not hit the cables, it came close enough to cause electrocution injuries to the three people in the basket, officials said.

The hot air balloon then crashed into a bean field. Two passengers were airlifted to Chicago-area hospitals in critical condition, according to firefighters.

The pilot was transported by ambulance to an area hospital.

No additional information about the incident had been released as of Sunday evening.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been called in to investigate and is expected to arrive on scene Monday.
