A popular young soccer player faces an uncertain future after breaking her spine in three places in a tackle that went horribly wrong.

The horrific incident occurred when Mikaela Lankowski was injured while attempting to tackle an opponent during a rugby league match for the Dalby Diehards against the Gatton Hawks in Queensland on May 12.

After “feeling tingling in her hands”, the 23-year-old was forced to remain motionless until the ambulance arrived.

Lankowski was taken to Dalby Hospital before being transferred to Toowoomba Hospital and ultimately Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital.

The popular club identity then received the news she had been dreading, with scans confirming a fracture and two breaks in three of her vertebrae.

Lankowski – who worked as a cleaner at Dalby Hospital – is now awaiting surgery and also facing a long rehabilitation process.

Her teammates – led by captain Sarah Milton – rallied behind her.

A GoFundMe page has since been set up to help cover associated costs, with just over $6,500 raised at the time of publication.

“It’s really heartbreaking,” Milton told News Corp. “Mikaela is a truly wonderful person, very modest.

“She (has already) contacted the girl she spoke to to say ‘don’t worry, it’s not your fault.’

“She loves her football, is a great leader and gives her all to everything she does in life.

“Mik is the life of the party wherever we go.”
