HORI announced a special gamepad for Steam / Steam Deck

HORI, a maker of popular gaming accessories, today unveiled the Wireless Horipad for Steam. So if you’re in need of a gamepad, this might be the one for you.

The main thing that concerns me here regarding Linux and Steam Deck support is their mention of a dedicated app. We have already seen at 8BitDo that some buttons on their controllers (like the rear paddles) require a dedicated application and therefore cannot be configured directly on Linux / Steam Deck.

In this case though, HORI shows a photo of Steam Input which has the rear paddles listed, so perhaps we could see complete Steam Input support for this. Considering this is a dedicated Steam controller, this would odd if you I could not adjust everything in Steam Input. They also mention Steam Deck several times.

Features:

  • Rear paddles (L4/R4) And 2 additional custom buttons (M1/M2) just at the bottom.
  • A dedicated quick access button.
  • Supports Bluetooth, XInput and DirectInput, but seems to support XInput only over a wired connection.
  • Estimated battery life of 12 hours (3.5 hours for a full charge).
  • Gyroscope in “Steam mode”. The sticks also have a touch sensor.
  • Rapid fire capability on face buttons (ABXY).

Their information mentions that this is the case not have vibration though, or a microphone port.

So far it looks like this has only been announced via their Japanese store, with no mention in their US or UK stores. The price according to their page is 9,780 Japanese Yen, which is around £50 GBP / $60 USD.

Update: In a Steam Input news post, Valve confirmed that they have added support for the new HORIPAD for Steam and that they “have been working with the HORI team to make their controller work well with Steam Input.”
