Hollywood wins an essential box office hit with “ Minecraft ‘film’ ‘

Los Angeles-Hollywood needed “a Minecraft film” to be a success, and he delivered in his opening weekend, considerably narrowing the deficit of this year’s box office.

No one guessed how great it would be. In its first days in theaters, the film won on Sunday 157 million dollars in theaters in the United States and Canada, according to the studio estimates. Internationally, it is planning an additional $ 144 million for a world start of $ 301 million. And with the current school holidays, “a Minecraft film” is just beginning.

“We are just delighted that the public responds and that everyone goes to the theater,” said Pamela Abdy, co -president and CEO of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.

Not only is it the largest opening of 2025, “A Minecraft Movie” also broke the record for a video game adaptation, a distinction previously held by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (146 million dollars). During the weekend, “Minecraft” analysts could reach $ 80 million. Instead, he almost doubled this figure.

“You cannot underestimate the value of serious, entertaining and joyful cinema,” said Michael Deluca, also co-president and CEO. “People really want an escape, especially when it involves the whole family.”

Nothing is guaranteed in the cinema, but an offer based on the best -selling video game of all time makes a good start. It didn’t matter that the games based on blocks did not have exactly a story. Many of its 200 million active monthly players have been in mass anyway.

Deluca said it was one of the “widest films” they have ever seen, which means it works in all cinemas around the world.

The film classified PG, directed by Jared Hess (“Napoleon Dynamite”), was a co -production of legendary entertainment and Warner Bros. It cost $ 150 million to do, not to mention marketing and promotion expenses. Jack Black and Jason Momoa lead the overall distribution (with Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers and Sebastian Eugene Hansen).

Their characters are transported in an imaginative dimension called overworld and must go on a dangerous and extremely silly adventure to go home.

“We made the film for fans and fans have exceeded our expectations,” said Deluca.

‘The code was finally cracked’

The criticisms were widely mixed on “A Minecraft Movie”, but the public gave it a more promising b +mascore and 4/5 stars in the posttrak output polls. Men represented around 62% of the hearing, and 64% were under 25. Warner Bros. went big on its release, opening the film in 4,263 locations at the national level and 36,000 international screens.

“The youngest audience loves to go to the movies, believe it or not,” said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst of the senior media for Comscre. “It is the perfect small screen for a big screen alliance. It has become an essential theatrical event. Consciousness was out of the charts.”

Video game adaptations have been successful in recent years, including “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, the series “Sonic” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s”.

“Video games were once a genre that had very mixed results at the box office, but the code was finally cracked,” said Dergarabedian.

Second place at this week’s box office went to Jason Statham’s action photo “A Working Man”, which added $ 7.3 million during its second weekend. Third place was occupied by the second episode of the episodic series “The Chosen: Last Supper”. The second part (made up of episodes three to five) won $ 7 million during the weekend. The third and last batch of episodes arrives in theaters on April 11.

“Snow White” slipped in fourth place in his third weekend, gathering $ 6.1 million. It is now more than $ 168 million worldwide.

It was a difficult start for 2025 for Hollywood and cinemas, with disappointments including “Snow White” and “Mickey 17”. But a blow can change the tides considerably, in particular with marketing thrusts in the booming theater for the Pivot summer films season, which starts the first weekend in May.

Before this weekend, the box office operated at a deficit of 13% compared to last year. Now the gap is down to 5%.

According to Comscore, with the national final figures, this list is launched in sales of estimated tickets from Friday to Sunday in the United States and Canadian theaters.
