1931 – Casino gambling is legalized in Las Vegas

While gambling was part of Nevada’s culture long before it became a state, it was five years after Nevada became a state in 1864 that the legislature decriminalized gambling. Over the next decade , some laws were relaxed, following which gambling began to flourish and it was finally on March 19, 1931 that Governor Fred B Balzer signed a measure to legalize casino gambling.


Faced with the collapse of his regime, Adolf Hitler issued the “Nero Decree” which ordered the destruction of all German industries, military installations, stores, transport facilities and communications facilities. This was done in order to prevent its use by Allied forces.

1962 – Bob Dylan releases his self-titled debut album

One of the greatest bards in rock and folk history, American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan changed the game of music with his poetic style and released his self-titled debut album on March 19, 1962 on Columbia Records. It’s been over 60 years since Dylan became a recording artist.

2003 – Start of the war in Iraq

On March 19, 2003, US and UK coalition forces launched war against Iraq. It was on the orders of then US President George W Bush that US forces ordered airstrikes on Baghdad. This marked the start of the war in Iraq aimed at overthrowing Saddam Hussein.

2004 – Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian is shot

On the eve of presidential elections in the Republic of China (Taiwan), in a shocking turn of events, President Chen Shui-bian was shot dead by an unknown assailant on March 19, 2004. It was during their election campaigns, Chen was participating in of a rally and was shot dead by the assailant.
