Scheffler was handcuffed and taken to a local police station after a misunderstanding led him to attempt to pass a police officer at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, early Friday morning.

There had previously been a fatal road accident near Valhalla when a pedestrian died after being struck by a shuttle.

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident with the golf superstar, said: “With traffic blocked and increasing, Scottie Scheffler attempted to enter Valhalla Golf Club using a side median, at which point a police officer asked him to stop.

“Scheffler attempted to continue, the officer then attached himself to the side of Scheffler’s car. Scheffler stopped the vehicle as it turned into the Valhalla Golf Club at the entrance, approximately 10 to 20 meters from the point where the policeman initially told him to stop.

“At that point, the officer ordered Scheffler to get out of the car. He rolled down the window, the officer grabbed his arm and began to pull him. He reached inside, opened the door out of the car, took Scheffler out and pushed him up against the car, immediately handcuffing him.”

Darlington then posted video footage to his X account in which Scheffler appeared to turn to the reporter and say, “Can you help me please?”

A police officer is then seen telling Darlington: “Right now he’s going to jail and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Scheffler was arrested and faces charges of second-degree assault on a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and failure to obey the traffic signals of an officer directing traffic.

The Louisville Metropolitan Correctional Department released a photo of the 27-year-old man and revealed he was arrested at 7:28 a.m. local time and released at 8:40 a.m.

With play delayed an hour and 20 minutes due to the fatal traffic accident, Scheffler headed to the golf course before teeing off in his second round.

Upon entering the club, he said nothing to the journalists waiting outside.

Fans cheered as he warmed up, while Rickie Fowler spoke with the world’s No. 1 golfer.

” Everything is fine ? » asked Fowler. Scheffler punched Fowler and continued to advance.

A chaotic day was just beginning for the two-time major champion, who released a statement on social media shortly before his departure, insisting it was all a misunderstanding.

“This morning I proceeded as instructed by the police,” Scheffler said.

“It was a very chaotic situation, which is understandable given the tragic accident earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding about what I thought I was being asked to do.

“It was never my intention to ignore any of the instructions. I hope I can put that aside and focus on golf today.

“Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest condolences to the family of the man who died in this morning’s accident. It really puts everything into perspective.”

Regarding the accident that caused the game to be delayed, the Louisville Metro Police Department said: “At approximately 5:00 a.m. ET this morning, LMPD responded to a call regarding a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian and a bus.

“Our preliminary investigation revealed that an adult pedestrian was crossing Shelbyville Roads southbound when he was struck by a shuttle bus traveling eastbound in the mandatory center bus lane.

“As a result, the pedestrian was fatally injured and was pronounced dead at the scene. The LMPD traffic unit is investigating.”
