Here’s what you had to say about a first Made by Google event

Made by Google is coming early, which means the new Pixel hardware is almost two months ahead of schedule. We asked you what you thought, and here’s what you had to say.

For those unaware, Google has announced that the next Pixel hardware launch event will take place on August 13. For the first time in several years, this event will take place at the tech giant’s headquarters in Mountain View.

Could this Made by Google event be an attempt to get ahead of Apple with the launch of the iPhone 16 series and new Apple Intelligence features? At this point it’s not clear, but you have a good idea of what you think it means.

76% of you think calling Made by Google 2024 earlier is a good move to get ahead of Apple and get these new devices into the hands of fans and buyers. I tend to agree. In years past, Google has often been overshadowed by Apple’s flashy September iPhone launches. Reader Berni actively questioned our poll – which is spot on! – but pointed out that an “August release better aligns with Android.” Berni went on to point out that we should have asked whether Google should “keep this release as the new standard.”

made by Google early

Personally, I agree with this. Moving up the annual Pixel launch and holding a Made by Google event beforehand makes sense. We’ve seen Google heavily discount devices shortly after launch, which actively hurts initial sales. Snow hopes we don’t get an announcement followed by a delay in the physical launch of the hardware. Stating that “momentum and excitement” will likely be lost if Google waits a few months to release the Pixel 9 series after unveiling it on stage.

Only 13% of you think October is the “place” for Made by Google launch events. It’s historically the last major smartphone launch of the year. With every OEM revealing their hand, it probably didn’t play well with the hectic Christmas and holiday season looming after the launch.

An even smaller 3.5% of you said Google’s Made by Google debut was too close to Samsung’s summer Unpacked event. With a foldable expected from Google, we’ll at least have an idea of how the Z Fold and Pixel Fold’s follow-up stack up without a long wait. That left 7% of you with plenty to say in our comments section. It was an interesting discussion, but most agree that Google made the right choice in moving things forward.
