In January, Apple agreed to pay $ 95 million to set a collective appeal to say that his voice assistant Siri listened to private conversations. Now, affected users have less than eight weeks to claim their claim to a slice of money.
THE Lopez against Apple Inc. A trial was brought in December, accusing Apple of recording private conversations following Siri involuntary activations, then sharing this data with third parties. Two complainants claim that they had related advertisements which were served to them after having personal conversations on special brands, another allegedly that they received an ad for medical treatment after a private discussion with a doctor.
It is not the first time that Siri has been accused of having listened to. A denunciator spoke about it at the Guardian in 2019, saying that external entrepreneurs assessing Siri’s efficiency were able to listen to everything, from criminal transactions to sexual meetings.
Apple has stopped using these third parties shortly after, and by adjusting this case, Apple also denies all reprehensible acts here. An Apple spokesman told Wired in January that “Siri data had never been used to build marketing profiles and that he had been sold to no one for no end.”
That said, Apple clearly wants the trial to disappear and – under the regulations – owners or buyers of SIRI compatible devices who experienced an involuntary activation of SIRI during a private conversation could be eligible for a payment of up to $ 100. Each person can submit a complaint of up to $ 20 per device, for up to five devices.
The list of eligible devices includes iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Apple Watch, Imac, HomePod, Apple TV and IPOD Touch – but the devices must have been purchased and used between September 17, 2014 and December 31, 2024. The trial is reserved for American owners.
How to claim
If you think you are eligible for part of the payment, you must submit your complaint before July 2, 2025. Some people will have received an email or a postcard inform them of their eligibility, as well as a complaint identification code. If you did, use it when applying. Otherwise, go to the webist for the case website and use the submission complaint page.
Start by choosing a “new statement”. You will have to submit your name and address, the email address associated with your Apple identifier, and either proof of purchase, or the serial number and the name of the model of each device you claim.
You will have to declare that you have known at least an involuntary activation of Siri during the window indicated in time, and that at least an incident occurred during a conversation intended to be “private or confidential”.
It should be noted that the amount of payment by SIRI device is capped at $ 20, but the amount that applicants really receive could be less depending on the number of valid complaints submitted. The final approval hearing to decide on the end amounts will take place on August 1, 2025, when the court decides whether the complaint is “fair, reasonable and adequate”.
