Here are the 20+ states considering supporting Apple’s digital ID feature in Wallet

One of the most anticipated features announced at WWDC 2021 was support for storing credentials in the Apple Wallet app. Touted by Apple as the final step before being “completely free from your physical wallet,” the feature is still only supported in a small number of states.

Nevertheless, more than 20 states are now working to adopt digital ID cards for citizens…

Which states will support digital IDs?

The TSA is currently piloting a program to accept digital IDs at select airports. Apple said the TSA is “working to enable” airport security checkpoints to be “the first place you can use your digital ID.”

Currently, only four states have launched support for digital IDs through Apple Wallet on your iPhone and Apple Watch: Arizona, Colorado, Maryland and Georgia. You can find more details about these states and the details of their implementations here.

Digital IDs are also the subject of a pilot program in California, but the system does not integrate with Apple’s. The program is managed entirely through a standalone application.

According to data compiled by the Secure Technology Alliance, more than 20 states are in the process of adopting mobile digital licenses. While that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll support Apple Wallet implementing the feature, it does mean they’re exploring the idea.

Here is the full list of these states:

  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • New Jersey
  • new York
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • Wyoming

Territories: Washington DC and Puerto Rico

Last updated February 8, 2024: Removed Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Texas, which the Secure Technology Alliance determined did not meet the criteria.

According to the Secure Technology Alliance, to be included on the list, a state must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Interoperable availability between operating systems
  • Interoperable implementation in progress
  • Pilot activities
  • Legislation enacted and/or study activity
  • Implementation of non-ISO standards
  • Other mobile activity

The progress of these efforts varies from state to state. In some states, there is simply legislation being passed to support digital IDs. In other states, there has simply been “activity” regarding adoption. Additionally, delays are to be expected whenever Apple works on a state-by-state basis with individual governments.

Apple said the following states are committed to supporting It is Implementation of digital identifiers in Wallet. You’ll notice that there are differences between Apple’s list and that of the Secure Technology Alliance, which shows how complex this deployment is.

  • Connecticut
  • Hawaii
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah
