Heinen and Matthews’ status still uncertain

Bruins

The Maple Leafs are 2-0 without Auston Matthews in their lineup this series.

The Bruins and Maple Leafs kept their lineups under wraps ahead of a pivotal Game 7 showdown at TD Garden on Saturday night.

Jim Montgomery has not committed to Boston’s starting lineup as the Bruins look to avoid becoming the first team in North American sports history to blow a 3-1 series lead in seasons consecutive.

“We are a 109-point team for a reason. RIGHT? And go in and enjoy the moment,” Montgomery said of his message to his team on Saturday. “Those are times when you were a kid and you want to be put in those situations. And now it’s up to you to accept it.

It remains to be seen if the Bruins will make any significant changes to their roster on Saturday night. Boston’s lineup for Game 6 didn’t generate much against Joseph Woll and the Leafs, but it was similar to the lineup that also had wins in Games 3 and 4 at Scotiabank Arena.

The only piece missing from Game 6 was forward Danton Heinen, who missed Thursday’s 2-1 loss due to injury. Heinen participated in Saturday’s morning skate, but his availability remains uncertain.

“We’re not sure yet,” Montgomery said of Heinen’s status for Game 7. “We’ll see how he feels later.”

Defenseman Andrew Peeke also skated Saturday and even took part in a few shorthanded reps, but Montgomery added the defenseman hasn’t been cleared to play yet. Peeke suffered an upper body injury in the second game against Toronto and has since been on a “week to week” recovery schedule.

Regardless of Boston’s lineup configuration on Saturday, the Bruins will need their star players to elevate their respective games in order to overtake Toronto. David Pastrnak (two goals, two assists in six games in this series) should have a breakthrough, especially after being recalled by Montgomery on Thursday night.

“I talked to him about it right after the game,” Montgomery said of how Pastrnak received said message. “I talked to him about it during the match. Pasta and I have a really healthy communication relationship and he’s ready to go.

Montgomery hasn’t announced a starting goaltender, but the odds favor Jeremy Swayman getting the nod for a fifth straight game. Swayman is 3-2 in this series, with a .947 save percentage.

The Maple Leafs also offered little concrete information regarding their roster, with all of Toronto’s forwards wearing the same colored sweater during morning skate at TD Garden.

Toronto star forward Auston Matthews participated in the full 15-minute practice with his teammates, but his availability for Game 7 remains uncertain.

“We’ll see what the day brings,” Toronto head coach Sheldon Keefe said after the morning skate. “But at the moment, all our strikers who played in the series are preparing to play. … So with Auston, obviously if he’s available, you’re going to use him. But for now, we’re proceeding as we have been doing it.

Matthews has missed Toronto’s last two games due to illness or injury, with Toronto managing to reel off back-to-back wins during that stretch to keep its season alive. Still, the Maple Leafs would welcome back a 69-goal scorer like Matthews if he were available, especially in a do-or-die Game 7.

“When your star player comes out, you have to improve your competitiveness and they did that,” Charlie Coyle said of Toronto’s recent play. Give them credit, they did it. And that’s something we have to do and like we’ve talked about before: find ways to get to the net, get the puck through, get bodies in front, take (Woll’s) eyes away.

Puck drop between the Bruins and Maple Leafs is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday.
