Heat-related deaths in Beryl: Three people have died in Harris County

HOUSTON — At least three deaths in Harris County are being blamed on heat following widespread power outages caused by Hurricane Beryl.

A 76-year-old man died of hyperthermia following a power outage during and after Hurricane Beryl, according to the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The medical examiner’s office also said a 50-year-old woman died at Houston Methodist Baytown from hyperthermia as well as other pre-existing medical conditions.

We also learned that a 78-year-old man, identified by his family as Oscar Rodriguez, died at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Heights. The cause of death was also hyperthermia. According to the medical examiner’s office, the power outage caused by Hurricane Beryl led to his death. As of Friday evening, his home was still without power, his family said.

At the height of the storm Monday, more than 2.5 million customers were without power. That figure includes outages reported by CenterPoint, which had nearly 2.3 million customers without power, Entergy and Texas-New Mexico.
