He couldn’t afford drama school, now he’s starring in ‘Dragon House’

Growing up in the UK, Mitchell always knew he wanted to be an actor. But because his family couldn’t afford to send him to drama school, he instead worked “part-time in a restaurant and in customer service at a local football club” and attended vocational school to study design and technology.

While working and studying, he applied to the Television Workshop in Nottingham, but was not accepted. His second attempt proved more successful, and the experience within the theatre group helped him land a role in the 2015 short film “Fire”.

With this film under his belt, Mitchell set out to find his place in the entertainment industry.

“I wanted to make sure I was part of that environment by all means,” he told the Times.

Mitchell copied the film onto dozens of discs and set about trying to find a performance.

“I got all the names of the agencies I knew in London,” he said in an interview with Hero magazine. “I got off the train and sent them to all the agents.”

Finally, he received a callback.

Since then, he’s been involved in high-profile projects like “Saltburn” and Netflix’s “The Last Kingdom.” With no formal theater training, Mitchell sees every project he’s given as an “opportunity” to improve his process.

“Every job I do is an opportunity to hone my skills and try new things,” he said in the Hero interview. “I try new things as I go and see what works, what doesn’t, mix it up for different characters. And so far, so good.”
