White threw her phone at the fox and fell backwards to the ground and the family’s two dogs intervened.

“I love animals more than people, so of course I was willing to protect the dogs. They obviously stepped in to protect me,” White said.

The interaction was caught on Ring cameras last week. The fox was later killed and its body recovered.

“We tested a fox last week and it came back positive, and then we had another bite incident today,” said Melinda Knight, environmental health director for the Georgia Department of Public Health.

The knight said McCowan said cases like this happen two to three times a year in the 12 counties she oversees. She echoed a warning Spalding County has issued to residents.

“If you see a fox or any wild animal, most likely a nocturnal animal during the day, it’s best to keep your distance,” Knight said.

For now, she said, animal control is responding to calls and everyone is pushing to protect their animals with vaccines.

White said the rabid fox showed up in the same spot where her four grandchildren play every day, and she’s on edge until they know it won’t happen again.

“I wouldn’t rule it out, but we just hope we’re at the forefront of that evolution,” Knight said.
